BAYAN LEPAS, December 31 — The new National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) autogate at the international departure area of Penang International Airport is currently undergoing real-time testing, with five units installed.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said Malaysian passport holders can use the new system to clear departure in under 10 seconds, while foreign passport holders still need to use manual counters temporarily.
He added that the number of autogates is expected to increase by two more units after two manual counters are relocated. Wong said the system is expected to complete testing and be officially operational by mid-January next year, allowing Malaysians and travellers from 63 countries to enjoy faster immigration clearance.
The NIISe upgrade, implemented by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad in collaboration with the Immigration Department, aims to reduce congestion caused by rising international passenger numbers—which have now surpassed domestic travellers—and to enhance overall passenger flow efficiency at the airport.
