KUALA LUMPUR, December 31 — Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming today stressed that keeping cities clean is a shared responsibility, not one borne solely by the government or local authorities.
Expressing disappointment over continued littering, especially in city centres and public spaces, he warned that such behaviour undermines Malaysia’s image as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026.
Nga said stricter enforcement will take effect from Jan 1, with fines of up to RM2,000 for littering, alongside possible community service of up to 12 hours within six months. While his ministry, SWCorp and local councils will continue cleaning efforts and enforcement.
He emphasised that lasting success depends on public awareness and cooperation, urging Malaysians to respect public spaces and help build cleaner, more liveable cities for future generations.
