PUTRAJAYA, January 1 – The Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga, ST) will implement a new energy efficiency star rating scheme for air conditioners from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2029, in line with the Energy-Using Product Guideline enforced since January 2025.

The revised rating raises the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and tightens star criteria to reflect technological advancements and higher efficiency benchmarks, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote energy-efficient and sustainable electrical products.

ST noted that during the transition period, air conditioners bearing the old energy efficiency labels will remain in the market, as the new ratings apply only to products applying for Energy Efficiency Certification from 1 January 2026 onward.

Products certified before that date may continue using existing labels until their certificates expire. Consumers are advised to check the year displayed on the label, review energy consumption information, and scan the QR code for detailed certification data when purchasing air conditioners.
