GEORGE TOWN, January 6 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has welcomed the federal government’s proposal to table a Bill limiting the prime minister’s tenure to a maximum of 10 years or two full terms, describing it as a crucial institutional reform to strengthen democracy, transparency and good governance.

In a media statement issued today, Chow said the move reflects the Madani Government’s commitment to fulfilling its reform agenda and ensuring accountable leadership for the long-term prosperity of the nation.

He noted that the proposed reform is in line with Penang’s own precedent as the first state to introduce a two-term limit for the chief minister following amendments to the state constitution in 2018.

Chow expressed confidence that the initiative reflects public aspirations for a more transparent and accountable system, promotes healthy leadership transition, and safeguards against abuse of power, adding that he hopes the reform will be firmly translated into concrete legislative action for the benefit of future generations.
