KUALA LUMPUR, January 12 — A contractor was killed and nine others injured this morning in an explosion at HELP University’s Level 4 cafeteria in Bukit Damansara, believed to have been caused by a gas leak from an air-conditioning compressor during routine maintenance.

The blast, which occurred around 11:45am, caused approximately 30% structural damage to the floor but did not result in a fire, authorities said. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that the victims include four students, two contractors, one university staff member, and two foreign cafeteria workers, with some in critical condition from debris injuries.

Firefighters from four stations, supported by a Hazmat team, responded to the emergency, ensuring the area was safe and conducting inspections to prevent further hazards. JBPM and university authorities have stressed that there are no indications of criminal activity.

And investigations into the incident are ongoing. Hospital Kuala Lumpur confirmed the 24-year-old contractor succumbed to injuries, while the remaining injured are receiving treatment.
