GEORGE TOWN, January 12 — Penang has earned major international recognition after being named one of the world’s top travel destinations for 2026 by both The New York Times and CNN Travel, cementing its status as a global tourism hotspot.
The New York Times ranked Penang No. 15 on its prestigious “52 Best Places to Go in 2026” list, making it the only destination from Malaysia to be featured, while CNN Travel also highlighted Penang among its recommended places to visit next year, drawing global attention to the island’s cultural depth and culinary appeal.
The accolades celebrate Penang’s rich multicultural heritage, living traditions and world-renowned food scene, particularly in George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. International media praised the island’s layered history, Peranakan culture, vibrant street art and affordable yet exceptional cuisine, which received its first Michelin Guide recognition in 2025.
