SHAH ALAM, January 14 — The government is seeking full cooperation from social media platforms by mid-2026 to restrict access for users under the age of 16, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said.

He said discussions between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and platform operators are ongoing to implement age-appropriate safeguards in line with the Online Safety Act, warning that regulatory action will be taken under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 against any service that fails to comply.

Fahmi also noted that MCMC is drafting 10 subsidiary legislations under the Online Safety Act 2025 to strengthen online child protection, including holding service providers responsible for preventing under-16 access and ensuring age-appropriate content for minors.

He cited recent enforcement actions, including the temporary blocking of X’s Grok AI over concerns about harmful and indecent content, as evidence of the government’s firm stance on online safety.
