GEORGE TOWN, January 18 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government is fully aware of public concerns over ferry services and rail connectivity at the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Butterworth station, describing them as valid issues that are receiving close attention.
He said executive councillors and relevant agencies have begun taking steps forward, including planned upgrades to the station and its surrounding facilities, noting that Butterworth is a key gateway for domestic travellers arriving by rail before crossing to the island.
Speaking at the official opening of the Iconic Marjorie Penang hotel today, Chow stressed the importance of ensuring a positive first impression for visitors, while also highlighting Penang’s growing role as a medical tourism hub under Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026.
He said the state welcomed 449,289 foreign patients last year and emphasised that tourism growth must translate into tangible benefits for residents, including job creation, stronger local businesses and a more resilient economy.
