CYBERJAYA, January 19 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and social media platform X will meet on January 21 to discuss online safety concerns, including the misuse of the Grok artificial intelligence application, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said.
He noted that authorities have identified ways Grok could still be abused, particularly to generate pornographic and explicit content that violates Malaysian laws, and expressed hope that X would introduce stronger safeguards.
The meeting follows MCMC’s temporary ban on Grok in Malaysia on January 11 after repeated misuse, with the regulator also considering legal action against X Corp and xAI LLC. Fahmi added that discussions are ongoing with various social media platforms on proposals to restrict usage to those aged 16 and above.
With implementation expected in the coming months as part of efforts to create a safer online environment, especially for children. – BERNAMA
