TANJONG TOKONG, January 19 — A serious act of vandalism has been reported at the pedestrian bridge at the Tanjong Tokong four-way junction, causing significant damage to the public facility that links Jalan Fettes and Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang.

Inspections following public complaints revealed that liquid was deliberately introduced into the lift wiring and sensor systems, resulting in burnt components, while several glass panels on the bridge were smashed, posing safety risks to pedestrians as well as vehicles passing below.

As a result, all lifts at the bridge have been fully shut down until repairs can be carried out, with the repair timeline and costs yet to be determined. The damage has severely affected elderly users, pregnant women and persons with disabilities who rely heavily on the lifts for safe road crossings, effectively denying them access and safety.

While also reflecting irresponsible behaviour that undermines public property, tarnishes Penang’s image as a tourism destination, and highlights the shared responsibility of the community in safeguarding public facilities, said Penang Island City Council councillor Lee Seng Hwai.
