KUALA LUMPUR, January 19 – Umno will defer its next party elections until after the 16th general election (GE16) to allow the party to focus fully on election preparations, president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2025 Umno General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Zahid said the decision is in line with amendments to the party’s constitution, which allow polls to be postponed within a specified timeframe.
Under the revised rules, Umno’s Supreme Council may delay elections for up to 18 months after the end of a full term or six months after a general election, whichever is later, to avoid internal divisions during critical periods.
Zahid added that any decision on whether top posts, including the presidency and deputy presidency, will be contested will only be addressed once party elections are held after GE16, which must take place by February 2028.
