GEORGE TOWN, January 22 — The Penang government has standardised quit rent for all schools in the state at a nominal RM50 per land lot, excluding international schools, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced.
He said the move applies to 106 schools on federal government land and another 201 schools on non-federal land, ending years of inconsistent rates where schools were previously charged residential rates or had to appeal for nominal reductions.
While international schools will continue to be charged commercial rates as they are considered businesses. Chow also said the state has reviewed quit rent calculations for first-grade land, which had not been updated since 1994.
And will now assess charges based on actual land use, with industrial or commercial use set at RM3.25 per square metre. He added that the 50 per cent quit rent rebate remains subject to conditions, including that landowners will not pay less than what they paid in 2025.
And appeals for reductions of up to RM20,000 can be submitted to district and land offices to expedite reviews.
