GEORGE TOWN, January 23 – Penang’s iconic Dewan Sri Pinang, a hub for social, cultural, and arts activities since 1972, is set for its first major facelift in over five decades, with upgrading works expected to begin by the last quarter of 2026.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the RM52 million project will be fully funded by the federal government, converting a previously approved loan into a grant, with no repayment required from the state.
The renovation, managed by Penang Development Corporation (PDC), aims to modernise the multipurpose venue while preserving its historical significance. Chow said final designs are being completed, with tender calls planned for July.
And the two-year project will see events continue at the venue until construction starts, likely after July or August. The upgrade marks a milestone in Penang’s cultural heritage, ensuring Dewan Sri Pinang remains a central space for public gatherings, arts, and community activities for decades to come.
