PERAI, January 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to reduce their sugar consumption, warning that unhealthy eating habits, particularly excessive sugar intake, are contributing significantly to the country’s rising public health burden and placing added strain on the national healthcare system.

Speaking at the launch of a new block at Seberang Jaya Hospital today, Anwar said Malaysia’s sugar consumption is among the highest in Asia, stressing that prevention through healthier eating is just as important as government spending on healthcare.

He urged intensified awareness campaigns, including offering healthier food and beverage options in hospitals and government premises, limiting sugary drinks in hospitals, and ensuring official government functions serve items with minimal sugar.

He also encouraged hospitals and clinics to play a more proactive role in public education by displaying posters and clear health messages highlighting the dangers of excessive sugar consumption. On the new hospital block.

Anwar said the expansion marks an important step in strengthening healthcare capacity in Seberang Perai and surrounding areas, reflecting the government’s commitment to providing more effective, timely and accessible healthcare services for the public.
