BUKIT MERTAJAM, January 25 — Penang aims to deploy a total of 5,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the state by October, including 1,000 units in Seberang Perai, as part of efforts to strengthen public safety and smart city management.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative aligns with the use of smart technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data and artificial intelligence (AI) to create a safer, more responsive urban environment.
He was speaking at the launch of the Seberang Perai Aspire Centre (SPACE), officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Chow said SPACE will serve as an integrated operations centre for the Seberang Perai City Council, enabling real-time monitoring, data integration, traffic management and public safety coordination.
Seberang Perai mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid added that the centre will enhance enforcement and crime prevention through integrated city data, fibre optic infrastructure and vehicle monitoring technologies such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
