KUALA LUMPUR, January 27 – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was seen in public for the first time on Tuesday after spending 22 days receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN). His brief outing took place at a café inside Pavilion Damansara Heights and was viewed as a reassuring sign of his recovery.

According to a media release from his office, Tun Mahathir was accompanied by his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, IJN chief executive officer Prof Dato’ Sri Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib, and medical officers.

He spent about 40 minutes at the café, where he enjoyed a glass of iced chocolate, marking his first outing since being admitted on January 6 following a fall at his residence that resulted in a fractured right hip.

Tun Mahathir was later brought back to IJN, where he will continue to receive treatment and rehabilitation. His office confirmed that he has not yet been allowed to return home and that visits remain restricted to immediate family members only.
