GEORGE TOWN, January 28 – The Penang state government has rolled out a comprehensive plan to address coastal erosion at Batu Ferringhi and Tanjong Bungah, with long-term mitigation works worth RM61 million approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the erosion has become a serious concern, affecting beach safety, aesthetics and tourism activities, prompting immediate and long-term intervention by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS).
Short-term measures include the placement of sandbags at affected beaches near major hotels in Batu Ferringhi, while technical assessments for Tanjong Bungah have been completed to enable swift action once funding is secured.
Zairil added that hydrographic surveys were completed in December 2025, with consultant appointments expected by February 2026, and a review of the Penang Integrated Shoreline Management Plan is underway to guide future erosion prevention efforts statewide.
