PUTRAJAYA, February 4 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh clarified that the feasibility study on the proposal to elect the Kuala Lumpur mayor is being conducted by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), not by any political party.

She said the study has been underway since December 2025 following the tabling of a private member’s bill by Members of Parliament in the Dewan Rakyat. Hannah stressed that IIUM is a reputable institution and expressed confidence in the quality of its research.

Adding that it is still too early to comment as the study remains at an initial stage. She said the findings would be carefully reviewed once completed to assess what can and cannot be implemented.

Upon completion, Hannah said the Federal Territories Department would prepare a paper for the Cabinet to determine whether amendments to the relevant legislation are necessary to pave the way for a mayoral election in Kuala Lumpur.
