PUTRAJAYA, February 6 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants the role of the Malaysian Media Council (MMM) to be enhanced as part of efforts to strengthen press freedom in Malaysia, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said.
Fahmi said Anwar conveyed this view during a phone call late last night, noting the need to reinforce the council’s capacity as the country moves towards a more open and mature media environment, including a possible review of media-related laws.
Fahmi said further discussions would be held with the MMM, which he described as the most appropriate platform to represent industry needs, adding that steps are underway to secure an office for the council as it refines its role.
He also highlighted concerns over journalistic ethics, particularly discrepancies between headlines and actual content, stressing that improvements are needed at editorial levels. The MMM, established under the Malaysian Media Council Act that came into force in June 2025.
Serves as an independent self-regulatory body to promote ethical journalism and protect media freedom.
