KUALA LUMPUR, February 10 — The Digital Ministry is drafting an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance Bill expected to be tabled in Parliament this year, aimed at addressing emerging technological threats including the misuse of deepfake technology.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the proposed legislation will establish a strong and comprehensive legal framework to regulate AI-generated content, safeguard information integrity and ensure the security of Malaysia’s digital ecosystem, with a key focus on accountability for entities that develop or deploy AI systems.

He said the Bill will require technology providers to implement proactive risk management measures, introduce mechanisms for reporting AI-related incidents and enable enforcement action in cases of negligence, fraud or threats to national security.

Gobind added that the government is also preparing a new Cyber Crime Bill to replace the Computer Crimes Act 1997, alongside finalising the National Digital Trust and Data Security Strategy 2026–2030 and plans to establish an independent Data Commission.

As part of broader efforts to strengthen data security, digital forensics and public trust in the digital economy.
