SHAH ALAM, February 10 — Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed his firm stance that pig farming should not be carried out in any district in Selangor, citing concerns over environmental pollution, public well-being and social harmony.

In a statement issued by the Selangor Royal Office, His Royal Highness welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent remarks opposing pig farming in areas objected to by local residents, including the proposed large-scale project in Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor which was discussed during the Prime Minister’s audience with the Sultan on Feb 8.

The Sultan stressed that pig farming poses risks of air pollution from foul odours and water contamination from waste and sewage, potentially affecting water catchment areas supplying Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, while also being unsuitable due to limited land and high property values in the state.

As an alternative, His Royal Highness suggested permitting the import of pork to meet the needs of non-Muslims, particularly the Chinese community, and urged that the pig farming issue be conclusively resolved to safeguard peace, unity and harmony in Selangor.
