GEORGE TOWN, February 11 — The Penang state government has clarified that a proposal by Stonyhurst International School to build a fenced football field at Straits Green Park, Tanjong Tokong, is intended to benefit both students and the local community, dismissing claims of exclusivity as misleading.
State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the RM450,000 project, fully funded by the school with no cost implications to the state, involves a 49m x 31m floodlit football field and was formally submitted through the Penang Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI).

Zairil stressed that public access to the facility would, in fact, exceed school usage, with the field open to the public on weekday evenings, throughout weekends and public holidays, and fully accessible during school holidays.
He urged residents, particularly in the Tanjong Bungah constituency, not to be misled by false information spread by certain individuals and NGOs, reiterating that the state government remains committed to decisions that prioritise public welfare through win-win initiatives for all stakeholders.
