KUANTAN, February 12 — Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has appointed Maxis Berhad as the Single Preferred Infrastructure Provider and Telecommunications Partner for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced.
The 10-year strategic agreement will see Maxis deliver a comprehensive 4G and 5G connectivity ecosystem across the 665km rail alignment, ensuring seamless mobile coverage for passengers, including inside tunnels and at all stations.
The initiative supports the government’s “Where There Is a Road, There Is Internet” policy and integrates a Multi-Operator Core Network with infrastructure sharing among major telcos such as CelcomDigi, Telekom Malaysia, U Mobile and YTL.
The appointment was formalised at the KotaSAS ECRL station in Kuantan during the arrival ceremony of the ECRL’s Golden EMU train and Electric Locomotive, officiated by Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook and Fahmi.
Beyond passenger connectivity, Maxis will manage telecommunications assets, provide onboard high-speed WiFi, broadband solutions for station retailers and enterprise push-to-talk services for railway operations.
While collaborating with U Mobile to develop shared mobile infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted coverage for users of all networks along the route.
