GEORGE TOWN, February 13 — A 66-year-old retired local bank employee in Penang reportedly lost RM1.69 million in an online investment scam involving foreign company shares, police confirmed.
According to the Northeast District Commercial Crime Investigation Division, the victim responded to a Facebook advertisement in mid-November 2025 and was invited via WhatsApp to join an investment group promising 10% returns within a day.
Between Nov 17 and Dec 6, 2025, she made 23 transactions into four separate bank accounts before realising she had been defrauded when no returns were received and additional payments were requested.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution with online investment schemes, verify legitimacy through Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission, and use the “Semak Sebelum Lebur” portal before investing.
