GEORGE TOWN, February 15 — The Penang City Council (MBPP) has rolled out a comprehensive traffic management plan in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year and school holidays. Under “Ops Cuti Sekolah” and “Ops Payung”.
Enforcement and traffic control will focus on congestion hotspots and tourist areas including Jalan Penang, Bukit Bendera and Ayer Itam from February 14 to 22. Selected routes such as Lebuh Light heading to Jalan Padang Kota Lama will see entry closures in the evenings to ease traffic flow.
While CCTV monitoring and extended enforcement hours until midnight will be implemented throughout the period. MBPP said construction and roadworks on major roads will be temporarily halted, except for emergencies, and maintenance teams will remain on 24-hour standby.
Joint patrols with the Royal Malaysia Police and the Road Transport Department will also cover areas such as Persiaran Gurney, Pulau Tikus, KOMTAR and Queensbay Mall. Visitors are urged to park only at designated areas and use public transport.
Including Rapid Penang and free shuttle services, as wheel-clamping and towing will be enforced against vehicles causing obstruction.
