JOHOR BAHRU, February 17 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has urged state media clubs under the Malaysian Federation of Media Clubs (GKMM) to submit a comprehensive proposal to strengthen welfare support for retired journalists ahead of National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) in June.

He said a more organised and systematic framework is needed to assist former media practitioners, particularly those who may feel sidelined after retirement, and encouraged GKMM to outline suitable forms of aid to ensure structured and effective support for industry veterans.

Speaking after presenting Tabung Kasih@Hawana contributions in Skudai, Fahmi also called on state media clubs to proactively identify former media workers in need and channel recommendations to the ministry.

During the visit, he personally handed over assistance to former Media Prima cameraman Idrus Rahmat and former Oriental Daily journalist Low Sock Ken, marking them as the 643rd and 644th recipients of the Tabung Kasih@Hawana initiative.

Which has been implemented by the Ministry of Communications through Bernama since April 2023.
