KUALA LUMPUR, February 17 — Supplies of essential goods such as chicken, meat and vegetables remain sufficient nationwide despite rising demand ahead of Chinese New Year and the upcoming Ramadan, traders say.

A Bernama survey at markets including Chow Kit found sellers increasing stock to meet festive needs, with chicken and meat trader Bambang Ali reporting sales of up to 600kg daily over the weekend compared with 200kg on normal days.

In Selangor and Penang, traders noted brisk business as customers stocked up early, while some suppliers adjusted operating hours during the festive break. Organic chicken supplier Zakaria Yunus said he had prepared over 1,000 chickens to ensure adequate supply for both celebrations.

However, some challenges were reported, including a slight drop in fish supply and price increases of RM1 to RM2 due to holiday closures among certain suppliers. Vegetable traders also cited limited availability of leafy greens and imported chillies.

Though supply is expected to stabilise about a week after Chinese New Year. Consumers meanwhile said early purchases help them manage expenses more prudently, with many buying perishable items in advance to avoid last-minute price hikes and shortages.
