KUALA LUMPUR, February 19 — As Muslims nationwide begin fasting tomorrow, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has urged the faithful to look beyond merely fulfilling the pillars of fasting and instead embrace Ramadan’s deeper spiritual purpose.
In a Facebook post, he said acts of worship should be guided by the spirit of mujahadah, the inner struggle against personal desires, and aimed at cultivating genuine piety and self-discipline. Anwar stressed that Ramadan serves as a period of character building.
Encouraging Muslims to strengthen their sense of responsibility and sincerity in daily life while seeking closeness to Allah. Deputy Prime Ministers Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Fadillah Yusof also called on Muslims to deepen their faith and practise moderation throughout the holy month.
Zahid described Ramadan as a time to multiply good deeds, repent and abandon wrongdoing, while Fadillah reminded the public to avoid food wastage, which reportedly rises by 15 to 20 per cent during the fasting month.
He encouraged charitable giving and mindful spending, urging Muslims to welcome Ramadan with humility, gratitude and a commitment to lasting positive change.
