GEORGE TOWN, February 20 — The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has voiced serious concern over the increasing rate of tree felling linked to mega development projects, particularly highlighting extensive clearing along sections of the Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) route.
Including Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Sungai Tiram and Gelugor. Warning that expanding public transport should not come at the expense of the state’s rapidly diminishing green cover, as the loss of mature trees threatens biodiversity, worsens urban heat, air pollution and flooding.
And undermines public health and liveability. Prompting CAP to urge an immediate halt to further clearing, a review of project designs and alignments, and stronger protection and transplantation measures to safeguard Penang’s environmental resilience for future generations.
