PETALING JAYA, February 20 — Former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has called on party leaders to remain open to criticism from members and the public, saying accountability is crucial for the nation’s interest.
The Setiawangsa MP stressed that raising concerns should not be seen as an attempt to tarnish the unity government’s image or create divisions ahead of the next general election. Nik Nazmi, who previously served in the Cabinet under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Said backbenchers who voice concerns are fulfilling their responsibility as a check and balance, not seeking to topple the administration. He acknowledged that Anwar has been working to strengthen the party’s credentials by tackling corruption.
But warned that unresolved tensions within the unity government could threaten stability. Nik Nazmi pointed to strained ties between long-time rivals United Malays National Organisation (Umno) and Democratic Action Party (DAP).
Describing the situation as a potential “ticking time bomb” if left unaddressed. He urged party leaders to confront these challenges openly as preparations begin for the next general election.
