KUALA LUMPUR, February 23 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Putrajaya will await a detailed briefing from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) before deciding on Malaysia’s response to new tariffs imposed by the administration of Donald Trump.

The United States recently introduced a temporary 10 per cent tariff on all imports, later raised to 15 per cent following a Supreme Court ruling on emergency trade powers. Anwar said the matter would be further discussed at Friday’s Cabinet meeting.

After initial explanations were provided by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He added that MITI is studying the potential impact of the tariffs and coordinating with officials in Washington, DC.

As well as Malaysia’s Asean counterparts, to determine the most appropriate course of action. The United States is Malaysia’s third-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching about RM367 billion in 2025.

And Putrajaya is also monitoring developments related to the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART), which Malaysia has signed but has yet to enforce.
