GEORGE TOWN, February 26 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has called for privacy to be accorded to a Penang executive councillor embroiled in a domestic abuse controversy after both he and his wife lodged, and later withdrew, separate police reports alleging assault.
Chow said the 34-year-old exco member had apologised to him over the incident, describing it as a family matter, and has extended cooperation to the police. He added that statements have been recorded and any further action would be left entirely to the authorities.
The chief minister said the state government views the matter seriously but will allow the couple time to decide their next steps, urging the public to respect their privacy. When asked whether the councillor should take leave.
Chow said it was up to the individual’s discretion, while investigations remain ongoing following reports that went viral on social media.
