KUALA LUMPUR, February 27 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to uphold the status of Bahasa Melayu as the national language while avoiding divisive issues that distract from economic progress.

Speaking at the Huazong Chinese New Year 2026 celebration, he said Malaysia’s strength lies in its multiracial unity, built on mutual respect for cultural and religious differences, which underpins national stability and prosperity.

Anwar stressed that Islam’s position as the religion of the Federation and Bahasa Melayu’s constitutional status are not open to dispute, while other communities remain free to practise their faiths and languages.

He added that mastering English and Chinese is also important for economic competitiveness, urging the public to focus on strengthening investments, job opportunities and education for future generations.
