PUTRAJAYA, March 2 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will make every effort to maintain the subsidised RON95 petrol price at RM1.99 per litre despite rising global oil prices following the US-Israel attacks on Iran.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, acknowledged that disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz could push prices higher but stressed that the government remains committed to sustaining the subsidy under the Budi95 programme.

He cautioned, however, that global market forces are beyond Malaysia’s control. International reports indicate oil prices could surge sharply when markets reopen, with analysts projecting significant increases despite Opec+ plans to boost output.

Global markets have turned cautious amid escalating geopolitical tensions, raising concerns over further volatility in energy prices.
