GEORGE TOWN, March 3 – Penang DAP leader Lim Guan Eng has raised concerns over the astronomical increases in quit rent for land classified as First Grade, Condition A, B, C, and “Nil” land use categories.
Citing cases where annual quit rent surged from RM6 to RM19,400 or RM745 to RM489,775, Lim questioned whether the hikes stemmed from errors by Land Office officials or flaws in the system itself.
A highlighted case in Permatang Pauh saw a reduction from RM68,068 to RM12,155, still 485 times higher than the original RM25, indicating systemic issues.
Lim stressed the need for accountability, urging affected landowners to seek assistance at DAP Bagan and Air Putih service centres to appeal for fair reductions.
