GEORGE TOWN, March 3 – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Penang has summoned 63 individuals to record statements over alleged abuse of power involving senior state officials in land purchases and misuse of zakat funds.
Investigations, which began in mid-January, focus on the proposed purchase of three land plots worth about RM10 million and the alleged misuse of RM184,000 under zakat assistance schemes to settle an asnaf’s housing loan without proper procedures.
Those called include members of the State Islamic Religious Council, the Mufti, State Secretary, State Financial Officer and zakat board representatives. Penang MACC director Datuk Karunanithy Y Subbiah confirmed the probe.
Adding that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 following disclosures made during a recent state assembly sitting.
