PUTRAJAYA, March 5 — Fahmi Fadzil said the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill to limit the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years will be retabled in the June parliamentary session after falling short in a recent vote.
He said the Cabinet reviewed the matter and aims to ensure full attendance from government MPs to secure the required two-thirds majority. The Dewan Rakyat had failed to pass the Bill after it garnered 146 votes, two short of the 148 needed.
Fahmi said Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof briefed the Cabinet on the absence of eight government-aligned MPs. He added that some MPs had misunderstood the proposal, thinking it was meant to grant Anwar Ibrahim a fixed 10-year term, when it was intended to prevent indefinite tenure.
