BAYAN LEPAS, March 11 – Penang International Airport is upgrading its facilities with new Auto-Gates, an e-hailing pick-up zone and the Malaysia National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe).
As part of ongoing improvements to support growing passenger traffic. Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy Wong Hon Wai said the upgrades aim to enhance travel convenience while the airport expansion progresses in phases.
Phase One of the project has reached 98 percent completion, Phase Two stands at 54 percent, while Phase Three involving the new terminal building has yet to begin. The new Auto-Gates system now serves travellers from 73 countries for departures and 65 countries for arrivals.
With plans to expand to 12 gates each by year-end. A dedicated e-hailing pick-up zone with real-time vehicle information and an air-conditioned waiting area has also been introduced. Meanwhile, MyNIISe allows travellers to clear immigration using QR code scanning.
In 2025, Penang International Airport handled 8.31 million passengers, an 11.25 percent increase from 2024. The airport currently manages about 22,000 passengers daily and plans to expand parking aprons from 16 to 28 to support future growth.
