GEORGE TOWN, March 12 — The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has welcomed the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living’s (KPDN) decision to gazette regulations effective March 1 prohibiting non-citizens from purchasing subsidised packet cooking oil.
And introducing MyKad scans to streamline purchases, describing the move as timely in ensuring subsidies reach intended low-income Malaysians. CAP noted that digital verification can reduce leakages, curb abuse and improve transparency.
Addressing long-standing complaints of traders denying Malaysians access while selling to foreigners at prices above the controlled rate, and stressed the need for firm enforcement alongside safeguards to protect personal data and ensure smooth implementation.
Reaffirming its commitment to defending consumers’ rights and fair subsidy distribution.
