KOTA KINIBALU, March 15 – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced an additional public holiday for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration to allow Malaysians more time to travel and spend with their families.

Speaking at the National Consumers Day celebration in Kota Kinabalu, he said the extra holiday will depend on the official date of Aidilfitri following the moon sighting. If the first day of Hari Raya falls on Friday, March 20, then Monday, March 23 will be declared the additional public holiday.

However, if Aidilfitri falls on Saturday, March 21, then Friday, March 20 will be the extra holiday. The crescent moon sighting to determine the start of Syawal is scheduled for the evening of March 19 at several locations nationwide.

Anwar said the additional holiday is also a gesture of appreciation for Malaysians’ dedication throughout Ramadan.
