KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 — Tunku Tun Aminah Sultan Ibrahim has been appointed chairman of U Mobile effective March 13, marking a significant leadership transition.

Founder Vincent Tan Chee Yioun stepped down a day earlier and will continue serving as advisor to the board. The appointment follows Mawar Setia Sdn Bhd increasing its stake in U Mobile to over 50% after completing a share sale with Singapore Technologies Telemedia.

The move signals a shift towards stronger Malaysian ownership as the telco enters its next growth phase. U Mobile said the leadership change aims to enhance governance and long-term funding support, enabling faster rollout of the country’s second 5G network.

The company highlighted Tunku Aminah’s extensive experience in leading organisations and serving on corporate boards as it strengthens its position in Malaysia’s evolving telecommunications landscape.
