GEORGE TOWN, March 19 — Six years after Malaysia implemented the Movement Control Order on 18 March 2020, Penang’s tourism industry has not only recovered but surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
January 2026 saw international flights at Penang International Airport reach 336 per week, up from 293 in January 2020, representing a 14.7% increase.
Passenger traffic also grew 12.8%, rising from 656,790 to 740,883 travelers. The state has expanded its global connectivity with new direct international routes to cities.
Including Xiamen, Shanghai, Chengdu, Yangon, Dubai, and Chennai, enhancing Penang’s status as a key regional hub.
These developments highlight the industry’s resilience and the effectiveness of ongoing recovery strategies.
Looking ahead, Penang aims to further strengthen aviation links, diversify tourism offerings, and expand international markets.
Officials emphasize the importance of sustaining growth to ensure more travelers can discover and experience Penang.
With these efforts, the state’s tourism sector is poised to continue its upward trajectory, attracting visitors from around the world and cementing Penang’s reputation as a vibrant and accessible destination.
