GEORGE TOWN, March 21 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has urged Wee Ka Siong to “do his homework” before criticising the state’s revised 2026 land tax rates.
Chow said the cases raised involved First Grade land titles without specific categories, making tax assessments more complex.
He stressed that explanations had been provided through prior briefings and statements.
Chow added the state introduced a 50% rebate and seven improvements to cushion the impact, ensuring balanced revenue collection and affordability.
He noted Penang’s rates remain competitive with other states and said comparisons across different revision years are misleading.
The state government, he said, remains open to appeals and discussions, rejecting claims of imposing sudden tax hikes without engagement.
