KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — Electoral reform group Bersih has urged that the proposed Bill 5/2026 separating the powers of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor be referred to a Parliamentary Select Committee instead of being rushed through Parliament.

In a memorandum to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said, Bersih chairman Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz raised concerns over the appointment process for the Public Prosecutor.

The independence of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission, and the lack of clear safeguards against abuse of power. The group said the bill should be reviewed by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights, Elections and Institutional Reform.

Under Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders to ensure prosecutorial independence and constitutional balance are properly protected.
