KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 – NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB) has developed a high-performance graphene-enhanced sodium-ion battery prototype exceeding 300Wh/kg energy density, marking a major milestone in Malaysia’s energy storage ambitions.
Developed under the NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative (NESTI) with International Battery Centre (IBC) Sdn. Bhd., the prototype uses a NASICON-based sodium vanadium phosphate cathode integrated with graphene nano-additives.
The technology offers improved safety, thermal stability and reduced reliance on critical minerals compared to lithium-ion batteries. NMB said the prototype validation stage positions Malaysia on the global battery map, aligning with the “Made In and By Malaysia” model.
The sodium-ion battery targets grid-scale storage, renewable energy integration, telecommunications backup and low-speed electric mobility. With the global sodium-ion market projected to expand rapidly by 2035.
NMB aims to strengthen Malaysia’s role in the regional battery value chain through industry partnerships and commercialisation efforts.
