BAYAN LEPAS, March 28 – Penang International Airport is set to become home to Malaysia’s first Remote Digital Virtual Tower (RDVT), a cutting-edge air traffic control system under its RM1.5 billion expansion.
Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Sim Tze Tzin said the system, equipped with 16 high-definition cameras, infrared sensors and 360-degree surveillance, will deliver real-time monitoring of flight movements to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).
The high-tech system is expected to begin operations by mid-April, marking a major leap in digital aviation management. Sim said the RDVT enhances efficiency, safety and capacity while supporting rising passenger and cargo demand.
The airport’s expansion is progressing on schedule, with apron upgrades due by mid-2027 and a new domestic terminal in planning. Cargo throughput has surged, reinforcing Penang’s role as a key global semiconductor logistics hub, attracting major players like Broadcom Inc. and boosting the state’s economic growth.
