GEORGE TOWN, March 30 — Penang Tourism and Creative Economy exco Wong Hon Wai visited Xiamen to strengthen long-standing sister city ties.
Marking over 30 years since both cities formalised relations in 1993. He highlighted deep cultural, linguistic and historical connections.
Noting Xiamen remains Penang’s only sister city in China and a key tourism partner. Wong said closer cooperation includes improving customs processes and expanding tourism flows, leveraging daily direct flights between Penang and Xiamen.
He also noted opportunities to tap into the wider Fujian market and enhance exchanges, including marathon collaborations.
Officials discussed preparations for Xiamen’s new Xiang’an International Airport, expected to open by year-end, which may impact future travel arrangements.
