PUTRAJAYA, April 2 — About 80% of the natural gas used for electricity generation in Malaysia is produced locally, helping shield the country from global fuel price volatility, according to the Energy Commission.
Its CEO, Siti Safinah Salleh, said strong reliance on domestic supply reduces the impact of rising global prices triggered by Middle East tensions, though around 20% of gas is still imported.
She urged households to adopt energy-saving practices to manage costs, including reducing electricity use and investing in efficient appliances.
Electricity demand rose to 143,973 GWh in 2025, while safety performance improved with fewer electrical and zero pipe gas accidents reported.
