GEORGE TOWN, April 2 — The Penang government has agreed to lower quit rent rates for certain older industrial and business land titles after strong protests from landowners.
Over steep increases under the revised 2026 structure. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said more than 800 affected plots, often involving temporary structures or sites without planning approval.
Will now be charged at reduced rates of 70 sen per sq m in urban areas and 50 sen in rural areas. Significantly lower than previous rates of up to RM3.25 per sq m.
However, he clarified that these landowners will not qualify for the existing 50 per cent rebate offered to most others. The state has also introduced relief measures including instalment payments and nominal charges for schools and non-profit land.
Authorities received over 4,000 appeals, with many still under review, while collections remain slightly behind last year.
