BAYAN LEPAS, April 9 — Penang marked a major aviation milestone with the inaugural direct flight from Chongqing, strengthening connectivity with western China.
Penang State EXCO for Tourism Wong Hon Wai said the new route, operated by Chongqing Airlines, makes Chongqing the eighth Chinese city linked to Penang via scheduled flights.
Operating four times weekly, the service enhances tourism and economic exchanges while supporting Penang’s strategy to expand its presence in the China market amid global uncertainties.
Wong highlighted that the route builds on earlier charter services and strategic promotions, including partnerships and marketing campaigns in Chongqing.
He noted the complementary appeal between the “Mountain City” of Chongqing and coastal Penang, offering diverse travel experiences.
With Penang’s durian season arriving earlier this year, the new connection is expected to attract more visitors and further strengthen bilateral tourism and cultural ties.
